Birthday Card using punches

Punches are a very useful addition to any crafters’ goodies box. They are quite versatile and as well as using them for punching through paper and mounting onto your card, you can also make stencils that you can then sponge colour through onto paper or card. This month’s card is made using both methods. You do have to be careful with punches as the detailed ones (mosaic) will only punch through paper, whereas the daisy one will happily punch through thin card.

I have chosen a neutral colour scheme for this card and I would be quite happy to send it to a man. I have also made the same basic card using navy and silver for a 25th Wedding Anniversary.

You will need the following:-

  • piece of A4 cream card
  • piece of A4 brown pearlescent paper
  • piece of A5 gold pearlescent paper
  • piece of A5 cream pearlescent paper
  • scrap of gold card to mount the greeting on
  • mosaic punch of your choice
  • large daisy punch
  • scroll stamp of some kind to make the background
  • greetings stamp or peel off
  • 1mm double sided foam pads
  • 3mm extra large double sided foam pads
  • double sided tape
  • glue stick
  • M & F Folding Board
  • brown StazOn ink pad
  • brown Marvy ink pad

  1. Place the short end of the cream card face down against the butt bar of the folding board, score on line 2 and fold.

  2. Place the fold against the butt bar and score on line 6. Gently bend the card until the two short edge meet and holding them together brush back over the fold to crease. (This ensures that the card folds with the edges meeting and not overlapping.) You should now have a perfect offset gate front card. For this card the larger piece is on the left.

  3. Using the brown paper, cut two pieces, 19.5cm x 8.5cm and 19.5cm x 4.5cm and attach with double sided tape to the two front sections of the card leaving a cream border showing on each piece.

  4. Using the gold paper, cut two pieces 19cm x 8cm and 19cm x 4cm.

  5. Taking the larger of these two pieces use the scroll stamp and brown Marvy ink to cover the piece entirely, turning the stamp to fit and stamping off the edge. If you do not turn the stamp each time you will not get the random effect of background paper. Attach this using double-sided tape to the larger side of the card to leave a small brown border.

  6. Next with the cream paper and using the mosaic punch, punch three images with enough room around them for a one-centimetre border. Use the glue stick to adhere these images to the remaining brown paper. Cut, leaving a small border, (about a quarter of a centimetre), all around. Put these aside for the moment.

  7. Using a scrap of paper and the mosaic punch make a stencil. Mark a pencil line through the centre point of the image across the whole piece of paper to make alignment easier.

  8. Mark the centre point of the long side of the 19cm x 4cm piece of gold paper and this is where you will stencil your first image. Use this mark to line up the stencil and whilst carefully holding it down with one hand use a finger dauber or piece of sponge and the Marvy dye ink and dab the ink through the paper to leave the image of the mosaic. This takes a little practice and needs a gentle touch. Try it out on a scrap piece of paper first. Do not rub the ink or twist the dauber/ sponge through the paper or it may move and you will end up with a blurred image, just use a dabbing motion. When the first one is completed repeat at each end of the paper and then in-between the three images. Attach this stencilled strip to the right hand side of the card using double-sided tape and leaving a small brown border as before.

  9. On a piece of cream paper using the brown StazOn inkpad, stamp your greeting (I used one from Woodware - FRCL 080 Mixed Greetings). Dab the Marvy pad onto a tile or piece of acetate and using a water brush pick up the colour and gently shade the greeting as shown. You could of course just use a sticker greeting if you don’t have any stamps.

  10. Trim the greeting to approximately 8cm x 2.5cm and stick with double sided tape onto a piece of the brown paper. Trim to leave a very small border. Mount this onto a piece of gold card 9.5cm x 3.5cm to leave a slightly larger border.

  11. Attach the three punched pieces using 1mm pads as shown onto the left side of the card. It’s best if you don’t do it evenly so as to leave space for the greeting and flower. Find the best place to attach the greeting making sure that it overlaps the smaller side as shown (I attached mine slightly lower than central). Place a large 3mm double-sided foam pad onto the left side of the greeting and stick to the card. Then gently lift the piece to find the correct place to attach another 3mm large pad so that it sticks to the edge. Do not stick across the card or it will not open.

  12. Punch two daisies one each from the brown and cream paper. Gently curl the petals with a cocktail stick, offset them so that both colours show and stick together using a small piece of double sided tape, (cream on top). Attach to the card using a large 3mm pad, so that the petals overlap the greeting and finish by sticking a small peel-off flower or jewel into the centre.

  13. If you have any difficulty with this or any other project, please come along to our shop and we will do our best to help you, advice is free and, as always, you can view the completed card together with other samples. Contact details can be found in our advertisement.
