CD and Alcohol Inks

How many of you have wondered what to do with unwanted CD’s. Well, by using Alcohol Inks you can create beautiful works of art and use them on the front of greetings cards.

You will need: -

  • 14x 14cm card

  • Border or corner Peel-offs

  • CD

  • Alcohol Inks (3 colours of your choice)

  • Blending Solution

  • Applicator Tool and Felt Pads

  • Silicone Glue

  • Double-sided Tape

  • Selection of paper/silk flowers

  • Deckle-edge Scissors

  • Craft Sheet

A word of warning, Alcohol Inks will permanently stain so use a craft sheet.

  1. Put a felt pad onto the applicator tool and gently squeeze each colour of the alcohol ink for two seconds onto the pad making sure that the colours are about half a centimetre apart.

  2. Hold the neck of the tool between the thumb and forefinger and apply the ink all over the CD with a twisting motion taking care not to “muddy” the colours by applying too much in one place. It doesn’t matter if you don’t colour all the CD the first time. Less is better!

  3. Apply more ink as required and continue laying colour down onto the CD allowing to dry for a few seconds between coats until you’re happy with the result.

  4. Then put a squeeze of Blending Solution on to the same pad and apply to the CD using the same twisting action and watch the colours blend together. You should be left with a unique design of vibrant colour.

  5. Using the Deckle-edge scissors cut around the card and decorate with corners/borders then centrally secure the CD using double-sided tape or silicone.

  6. Arrange the flowers in the centre of the CD to hide the hole and secure them using silicone.

There’s no end of colour combinations that can be obtained. The more you practice using the Applicator the easier it will become and your designs will get better and better. Tim Holtz has a excellent CD which explains the finer points of using Alcohol Inks or you can simply call in for a few pointers.
